Daily Writing Exercise

Poems For Paint

Each morning, I select a painting. I write a poem for it. That evening, I mark it up with red pen. The next day, I type it up with those edits.

The goal of this exercise is not to have 365 beautiful poems at the end of the year, but to be in the habit of crafting phrases, evoking emotions, and drafting my work.

I do recommend finding the painting for yourself. The portions shown here don’t do them justice.

On the Theme

The paintings and works featured here are from the eras surrounding the Impressionist movement (1860s-1880s). The artists’ vivid techniques were used at this time to evoke moments even truer than exact replication could.

Technique to conjur more of a feeling than a message is a recurring theme and goal in this experiment, so impressionism is a fitting movement to work with.

Additionally, all the pieces are long-since remembered and immortalised, so I don’t fear doing any damage.
