On the beach of the Black Sea

by Konstantin Alekseevich Korovin (1890)

There’s rocks between us now
Now the Black Sea’s tide went down
And one of us put them there
Maybe the waves, they just laid you gracefully
And your dress came to rest on the crest
But there’s rocks between us now

Now you sit there in perfect pose
And in those clothes you could be a stone
Are you considering?
Your auburn curls unfurl under your pretty pearl hat
I recall your face had the grace of the faded
But there’s rocks between us now

Did you only put my words in your basket”
Did you try to swim or just say ‘Nah, ‘cause
‘He’ll get over it and quick’?
Did you need the see in your lap to be
Whisked to where distant clouds kiss abyss
Did you see there’d be rocks between us now?

It'll be you’ll turn or I’ll get my shoes wet
Else we’ll be like we never met
Only this time we’d never chance to meet again
I could leave the beach, steal away from your reach
Or roll over shoals and get used to the cold
Either way, I think there’s gonna be rocks between us now

And I like us too much for that
