The Damrak, Amsterdam
by George Hendrik Breitner (1903)
Won’t someone take a boat
Down the canal out of my sight
I’m sure it’s masts and sails are
Casting shadows on my clouded skies
The water has been oil
As long as I can ever recall
It would not mercy the children
If in their games one should fall
I’ll stand here on the dock
And watch horizon’s bodyguard
He’s jagged and toothy wild
And holds behind his back an open farm
So someone start clearing skies
It’s the only way I’ve got left to go
‘Cause I’ve damned Amsterdam’s damrak
And now damnation’s hot breath’s close
